Today's PNC Field is a delightful place to enjoy baseball in the NEPA Scranton-Wilkes Barre area. Before that stadium (and its previous incarnation known as Lackawanna County Stadium), Scranton had its own ballpark ... "Scranton Stadium" or "Scranton Dunmore Stadium". This ballpark replaced the former home of all Scranton baseball Brooks Athletic Field (coming next week) which had stood in various incarnations since the 1800's and this new Scranton Stadium was home to one of the top 100 teams ever to play the game... the Scranton Red Sox. The ballpark would only last 14 years before it was torn down and sent un-ceremoniously to Richmond Virginia where it was re-erected as part of Parker Field. For 14 years however... this place was a mecca for war era and post war era baseball, once drawing over 300k fans in one season (that's massive for this era where some Major League teams struggled to reach that mark). We bring you Scranton Dunmore Stadium ... from 1940 - 1953 ... home of the Scranton Red Sox, the Scranton Miners and the stadium which would go on to produce the world famous Jimmy Piersall.
