In 2011, 3 major Independent Leagues... the long reknown upper midwest based Northern League, the California / Southwestern / Hawaii based Golden League and the Texas based United League, morphed into 1 big superleague... the North American League. The league would start play in 2011 with teams from from Hawaii to Alberta to Illinois to Arizona to Texas and back to California again. The plan was not only to compete with Miles Wolfe's newest venture, the independent American Association... but to surpass it. (Wolfe had been the one to prove that indy baseball could thrive independent of Affiliated Minor League / Major League baseball, in places that the MiLB was afraid to venture to). Unfortunately ... the league grew too big t0o fast and cracks immediately began to appear in the foundation. With such a wide expanse of travel, equal only to the Major Leagues (especially with several Hawaiian teams), the new sudden boost in fuel prices to over $4-5 per gallon (which in turn saw major increases in air travel) would very quickly kill what should have been a baseball league for the ages. Sadly many of these beautiful (including some former Triple-A) ballparks would never see professional baseball again.
