Miles Wolfe began his renegade Northern League in 1993 ... one of the very first in a huge wave of Independent minor league systems to bring professional baseball to parts of North America that had not seen pro ball in a very long time. Up until 1993, very few leagues existed that were not part of the "Major League affiliated Minor League system". Suddenly in the early 90's there were many new independent professional baseball leagues that sprung up but only a handful would be successful. The Northern League was by and large the ultimate success story and it lasted for 18 years ... at one time merging with the Northeast (Can Am) League to become a much larger institution before going back to its original roots. Despite ceasing to exist in 2010, the Northern League itself never did meet its demise. Instead it merged in 2011 with two other moderately successful independent systems... the Golden League and the United League to form the ultimate "North American League". This new combined "Super-league" had teams ranging from south Texas & Mexico... west to Hawaii and as far north as Edmonton Canada. The traveling budgets of this new NAL would quickly unhinge this once thriving organization which grew too fast too soon. Today Miles Wolfe's Independent American Association has taken over where the Northern League once stood strong while the Can-Am League (which had merged with the Northern League for 4 years from 1999-2003) is still thriving on its own in the Northeast & Canada.
