Defunct Independent League
The “Original” Eastern League is NOT the Double-A Organization we know of today. This Eastern League was more of a derivative of the New England League when it went defunct after 1915 from WWI. The NEL sprung up again as the “Eastern League” and then the “New England League” itself returned in 1919 and again from 1926 on… giving the New England region two different “trees” from the same root… the Eastern League with a Class A classification and the New England League with a Class B. This “Original” Eastern League ran into trouble when the depression started in 1930 and began to try to add the larger media markets of Virginia. The travel however from Norfolk & Richmond to New England was costly enough to counteract any good the larger markets brought and the original Class A Eastern League folded for good after the 1932 season. The original “New York-Penn League” (not related to today’s Single-A NY-Penn Lg) took the Eastern League’s name after it was retired in 1932 and became the Double-A Eastern League we know of today.
