The International League has been around nearly as long as the Major Leagues themselves… acting as the top Triple-A tier of the Minor Leagues (along with the Pacific Coast League and the former American Association). The International League has operated continually since 1901 … not even breaking for WWI or WWII making the International League, one of only 5 Minor League systems that have played unimpeded. The league got it’s “international” name, due to the initial inclusion of Montreal and Toronto on the ballpark roster. Havana Cuba fielded a Triple-A team from 1954-1960 as did Ottawa & San Juan joining in 1961. The league is still known today as the International League despite the fact that all teams now operate within the borders of the 48 contiguous states..
