Southernwestern League – Sophomore League
For whatever reason, many of these Southwestern New Mexco and Texas based leagues would change their names quite often in their history. The Longhorn League is a perfect example having 3 seperate distinct names in its history… the Longhorn League for 9 years… the Southwestern League for 2 years … and the Sophomore League for an additional 4. This Class C Texas based organization finally went defunct in 1961. The Longhorn League was famed for having tremendous offense and horrible pitching. Jim Bauman would set the all time professional record for home runs in a season with 72 HRs in 1954 and the league had plenty of .400 hitters. The quality of the pitching meanwhile was downright frightning with ERA’s commonly between 5.00 and 8.00
