The Georgia Florida League began as a Class D League in 1935 and hung around long
enough to get an official Single-A classificiation before disappearing forever
in 1963. Despite the state of “Florida” being named in the league, the GFL consisted
of teams mainly in southern and central Georgia. In fact, Tallahassee was
usually the only team representing Florida as Panama City played for just a single
season (and even Tallahassee dropped out for good in 1950, leaving only Georgia
franchises). Despite the fact that this league dates all the way back to
the mid 1930’s, these teams were rarely co-op … usually carrying Major League
Player Development Contracts (PDC), and playing as fully affiliated franchises. |
