The Piedmont League was based around the Piedmont Region of NC but held many franchises in the Norfolk-Richmond area as well. The league played for 35 seasons. Though they were Class B (and not an “A” League), the Piedmont League was considered with so respect that it became one of the very few systems that played right on through WWII; nearly every other league in the country shut down for 3 years. The league attracted former Hall of Famers to learn the art of managing here and promoted many others. Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Brooks Robinson, Duke Snider, Early Wynn, Johnny Mize, Phil Rizzuto and Tony Lazzeri were just some of the the greats who played and managed in this league.
