This “American Association of Professional Baseball” is not to be confused with the
former “Triple-A version of the American Association” that existed alongside the Triple-A International League and Pacific Coast Leagues. This American Association began in 2005 and combined many of the franchises of
Miles Wolff’s three former independent leagues: the Northern League, the Central League and most recently, the Can-Am League. The Northern Division is mostly made up of his “core” of former independent Northern
League teams white the Southern Division is made up of former teams from
the independent Central League franchises while 2014 temporarily added the new “eastern division” which was made
up of the 7 teams from the Can Am League. In 2010, several more teams were added from the Northern League when they morphed with the Golden League and United Leagues to create the North American League… and most recently, Joplin was added making for a 13 team league (with the 7 teams
in the Can-Am League making it a total of 20 in competition), only to be dropped the following season
in favor of the new Cleburne Railroaders. In 2016, the merger with the Can-Am League ended and they have become sepearate entities again, thus ending interleague play.
Despite the ever changing franchises and leagues intertwined with other leagues,
the American Association remains one of the strongest Indy leagues in the
nation. |
